Where We Work
HVAC Service Areas Across the Twin Ports & Northland
We design and install heating, cooling, and hydronic systems across northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin — from the Duluth hillside to North Shore lakeshore homes, and from Hermantown new builds to Superior's historic neighborhoods. Every city below has its own challenges. Click through to see how we adapt.
Duluth, MN
Headquarters
Duluth's combination of lake-effect humidity, sub-zero winter design temperatures, and rocky hillside foundations makes HVAC design here a different problem than in the rest of Minnesota.
Hermantown, MN
7 mi NW of Duluth
Hermantown is one of our most active service areas.
Proctor, MN
8 mi SW of Duluth
Proctor is a small bedroom community west of Duluth with a mix of mid-century homes and newer infill construction.
Cloquet, MN
20 mi SW of Duluth
Cloquet sits further inland than Duluth, which means colder winter design temperatures (we design for -23 °F here) and tighter sizing requirements.
Pike Lake, MN
10 mi NW of Duluth
The Pike Lake area is a mix of year-round homes and lakefront cabins being converted to four-season use.
Esko, MN
15 mi SW of Duluth
Esko is a small community in Thomson Township with a strong family-home market.
Carlton, MN
22 mi SW of Duluth
Carlton is one of the colder spots in our service area, with a -24 °F design temperature requiring carefully sized equipment.
Two Harbors, MN
27 mi NE of Duluth
Two Harbors sits right on Lake Superior, which gives it a slightly milder winter than inland Cloquet but more humidity and lake-effect snow.
Superior, WI
5 mi S of Duluth (across the bridge)
Superior, Wisconsin is the southern half of the Twin Ports — and most of its housing stock is similar to Duluth's: older homes with hot-water heat, oil-fired boilers ripe for conversion, and 1960s ranches with original furnaces.
Common Questions
Service Areas — Frequently Asked Questions
What is Design Heating's service area?
Design Heating serves the Twin Ports and Northland: Duluth, Hermantown, Proctor, Pike Lake, Cloquet, Esko, Carlton, and Two Harbors, MN, plus Superior, WI — roughly a 30-mile radius from our Duluth office. We also handle North Shore projects (Beaver Bay, Silver Bay, Castle Danger) and Wisconsin projects (South Range, Lake Nebagamon) on a case-by-case basis.
Do you charge a travel fee for cities outside Duluth?
For our core service area (within roughly 30 miles of Duluth), we do not charge separate travel fees on quoted installations — travel is built into our quote. For service calls outside this radius, we may add a modest mobilization fee, which we disclose up front.
Are you licensed in both Minnesota and Wisconsin?
Yes. Design Heating is a Minnesota-licensed mechanical contractor (#MB715020) and is fully bonded for residential work in Wisconsin (Superior and surrounding areas). We pull all required permits in both states and handle all code compliance ourselves.
Why does the design temperature matter for HVAC sizing?
Design temperature is the coldest 1% of hours in your local climate — it sets the heating capacity your system must deliver. Duluth's design temp is -19°F, but inland Cloquet is -23°F and Carlton is -24°F. Sizing a system to Duluth's number in Carlton would leave you cold on the coldest days. We use city-specific design temperatures on every Manual J.
Can you handle a project on Lake Superior shoreline?
Yes. We regularly work on lakeshore homes in Duluth's Park Point, Two Harbors' Burlington Bay, and Superior's Wisconsin Point. Lakeshore homes need direct-vent condensing equipment (wind-resistant venting) and careful combustion-air design. We default to that approach on any lakeshore project.
Outside These Cities?
We Still Want to Hear From You
We serve the wider Northland and North Shore on a project basis. If you're in Beaver Bay, Silver Bay, Lake Nebagamon, Solon Springs, Cromwell, or anywhere else in the region, call us and we'll let you know if we can take it on.
