Oil-to-Gas Boiler Conversion — Duluth Hillside Home

High-efficiency natural gas condensing boiler

Removed an aging fuel oil boiler from a 1920s hillside home and replaced it with a 96% AFUE natural gas condensing boiler tied into the existing cast-iron radiator network.

Outcome: First-month heating fuel cost dropped from approximately $640 to $215. Whole-house comfort dramatically improved with outdoor-reset control.

New-Build Geothermal — Hermantown Custom Home

4-ton vertical-loop ground-source heat pump

Designed and installed a full geothermal system on a 5-acre lot using six 250-foot vertical bores. Includes desuperheater for free domestic hot water during cooling season.

Outcome: Whole-house heating + cooling for less than $90/month average. Federal 30% tax credit captured by the homeowner.

Whole-House Infloor Radiant Heat — Pike Lake Lakeside

PEX-A infloor radiant, 4 zones, condensing boiler

Designed in LoopCad. PEX-A tubing in the slab and staple-up under wood floors on the upper level. Outdoor-reset condensing boiler with primary-secondary piping.

Outcome: Whisper-quiet, even heat throughout. No vents, no drafts, no cold spots on the tile bathroom floors.

2024 Two Harbors, MN 1,600 sq ft

Cabin-to-Year-Round Conversion — Two Harbors

Condensing propane boiler + 2-zone panel radiators

Converted a 3-season North Shore cabin to a year-round home. Installed a propane condensing boiler with European panel radiators in two zones (main living + master suite).

Outcome: Quiet, even heat throughout the upgraded space. Panel radiators warm up in minutes and don't take up wall space the way old cast-iron units did.

Furnace + Central AC Replacement — Superior, WI

96% AFUE gas furnace + 2.5-ton 18-SEER AC

Replaced a 22-year-old 80% AFUE furnace and matching AC condenser with a Manual J–sized 96% furnace and modern variable-speed AC. Added a high-MERV filter cabinet.

Outcome: Estimated annual savings of $480 on heating + $120 on cooling. Far quieter operation and noticeably better indoor air quality.

Hydronic System Redesign — Cloquet

Full hydronic redesign, new mixing valves and circulators

Inherited a hydronic system installed in pieces by multiple prior contractors over 20 years. Redesigned the piping topology, replaced mixing valves, upsized circulators, and re-balanced every zone.

Outcome: Every zone now holds temperature within ±1 °F of setpoint. Boiler short-cycling eliminated; system runtime down significantly.
